1659, Joseon's northern frontier. Stripped of rank for disobeying the throne, General Noh Jae-ha is exiled to the burned fortress of Onseong with forty convicts and sixty days before the Tumen River freezes and the raiders cross. His allies owe him nothing: Lady Song Hae-in, who blames him for her father's death; Elise Navarre, a shipwrecked foreign noblewoman who can cast cannons; and Hesu, a horse-clan princess who comes to bargain at arrow point.
