On the opening night of Carmen in snowbound Vienna, star mezzo-soprano Valentina Cruz learns at intermission that her husband, the conductor, is sleeping with the soprano who sings Micaëla. She threatens him in front of the whole company. By morning he has vanished, his car is smeared with blood, and her stage knife lies on the floor. The only person who understands is Adrian Kessler, the soprano's silver-haired husband, whose wife disappeared the same night. Two betrayed spouses, one hotel suite, and a heat neither of them can afford.
