Three winters after her husband died on the Saejae Pass, Song Hae-in runs the Pine Lantern Inn alone and laughs too loudly for a widow. Then a silver-haired guest named Yang Seo-ho rides in on a blizzard, pays in gold that turns to maple leaves by morning, and refuses to leave. He thinks she can't see the nine tails behind him on the paper door. She can. She lets him stay anyway, until a fox hunter rents the room next door.
