Three winters ago, Staff Sergeant Kwak Min-seo walked out of a minefield as the only survivor of her patrol. Now she is the quiet wife of the battalion commander who carried her out, living behind a perfect smile on a snowbound base near the border. Then painter Im Si-won arrives to paint the memorial to six fallen soldiers, and asks why the official photograph shows seven lines of boot prints in the snow. She remembers seven. Her husband says six.
